The Banaras Hindu University Common Research Entrance test (CRET) is conducted with an objective to select the candidates interested in doing their Ph.D. This is a University which is a reputed one and mainly conducts the common research entrance examination for the recruitment of candidates in to the PhD degree/ Vidyavaridhi degree for the current academic year.  The candidate’s performance in this entrance examination will be monitored and the selection will be strictly based on the merit or score that the candidate secures in the entrance examination.

Structure of Banaras Hindu University Common Research Entrance Test (CRET)

The structure of the written examination mainly consists of the objective type of questions.  The candidates will have to attend the objective type of questions in two sections. There will be a total of 100 questions in the written test. The questions will carry around 300 marks. The written test will involve around 2 hours. The questions will also involve regarding the subject area as per the qualification which the candidate possess.

There will be negative marking involved in this exam. Each wrong answer will be awarded 1 mark. Where as, each correct answer will be awarded 3 marks each. The number of questions which remain unattempted will be awarded only zero marks. It is mandatory for the candidates to secure around 35% of marks in each section separately. The candidates belonging to the reserved categories will be awarded relaxation in case of the minimum percentage of marks which need to be secured. The candidate cannot apply for the revaluation of exam papers.

Syllabus of Banaras Hindu University Common Research Entrance Test (CRET)

The syllabus of the Banaras Hindu University Common Research Entrance Test (CRET) is as follows –

  • Logical and Analytical thinking
  • Quantitative ability
  • Computer Awareness
  • General Knowledge
  • Language Skills
  • Management Studies

Eligibility Criteria

The basic criterion for attending this entrance exam for the PhD degree is a post graduation or a master’s degree. The candidates should have the Masters degree in any of the following disciplines –

  • Master’s degree in Business Management (M.B.M.)
  • Management Studies / Management Sciences (M.M.S.)
  • Master of  Business Administration (M.B.A.)
  • Master of International Business Administration (M.I.B.A.)

The candidates who have completed the Post graduate Diploma in Management from any of the reputed Indian Institute of Management such as IIMs, XLRI, IMT, IIFT, MDI etc.  The candidates also should secure at least 55% of marks in the Post graduation level. The candidates belonging to the reserved categories such as SC/ST/PH will be allowed relaxations in case of the reserved categories. The candidates who belong to the final post graduate program are also eligible to apply for this exam.

How to apply?

The candidates who are eligible to attend the CRET exam should obtain the application form the concerned office. The candidates should deposit the correct amount of fees. The candidates belonging to the general category should pay the application fees of about Rs 600 and those belonging to the reserved category should pay Rs 250 as the application fees. The candidates are required to deposit the application form along with the fees in the form of a Demand Draft from any nationalized bank. The candidates should pay the correct amount of fees in favour of the Controller of Examination, Banaras Hindu University. This should be paid at Varanasi. The candidates while filling in the application forms should keep in mind all the important criteria’s and all the relevant information’s should be entered in the correct format.  The candidates should submit an additional amount of Rs. 150 if it is found that the cheque that the candidates have deposited is not MICR recognized and the application forms are not filled fully.

How to Fill the Form?

The candidates should fill in the application forms with a ball point pen. The candidates should make sure that the information that they are entering is correct and they fill the details in capital letters where ever necessary as given in the instructions in the brochure.  The candidates should be careful that they leave appropriate space in between the columns while they enter the information. The candidates should paste the photograph appropriately in the correct space as mentioned in the instructions. The candidates should read in the information regarding the filling of applications carefully in order to reduce the number of mistakes.
