Chefs are multi talented professionals who cook innovative, delicious and mouth-watering dishes for other people on demand. Those who have studied the Catering and Chef Technology courses can work as Chefs. They are experts who are well versed in all facets of food preparation. It is the prime responsibility of a Chef to provide nutritious, fresh as well as tasty food items to the customers. These professionals should be familiar with all types of cuisine like Chinese, Indian, Italian dishes and so as to make a mark in the industry.

Qualifying Exam

In order to become a Chef, aspirants have to pursue the three-year Diploma course in Chef Management. They should pursue the course from a recognized Hotel Management institute so as to get a jump start career in top restaurants or hotels. Those who have done graduate degree course in Cuisine Technology or Hotel Management can as work as Chefs. Moreover, on the job training is required for these professionals. It takes years of experience to establish in this field. On completion of the course, majority of the Chefs work with full-service restaurants, hotels and special food services industry. In a business sense, these professionals can also start their own Cafeterias or Catering services. The pay scale of Chefs may vary with their designation and area of employment.

Who is eligible to apply?

Candidates should have finished 10 years of schooling and the 12th class or equivalent to apply for Chef Management or related courses. Intermediates in any discipline can apply for the course. However, they should have studied the pre-requisite course from a recognized Board so as to get admissions in reputed Hotel Management institutes.

  • Complete the 10+2 years of School education or its equivalent.
  • Enroll for the Diploma in Chef Management program.
  • Otherwise, pursue the graduation program in Hotel management and Catering Technology.
  • Gain on-the job training under the supervision of an expert Chef.
  • Search out for career in international Hotels or any other public or private sector food industries.

Skills required for a Chef

An expert chef should have good knowledge about management in addition to their cooking expertise. He should have good knowledge about food and labor cost, public health regulations and fire code and so on. Chefs should have the capability to meet the customer needs and also be familiar with cooking as per the demand so as to shine in the sector.
