Civil services examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. The exam is held in two stages. The first stage is preliminary exam, successfully clearing which entitles the students eligible for the main examination. Students can choose chemistry as one of their two optional subjects in the main examination. The subject is popular with students having science background. The exam is a tough one so sufficient preparation is very essential. The pattern of the exam is described below.

The exam is held every year in the month of October or November. The time given for the exam is 3 hours and the maximum marks are 300. There are eight questions in the question paper. The questions are divided in two sections, each consisting of four questions. The first question of both the sections is compulsory. Students have to answer any three questions, taking at least one question from each of the sections. The questions are given in two languages- English and Hindi. Students can answer in any language of the two, provided the language of their choice is specified in the admit card. The questions carry equal marks i.e. each question is of 60 marks. However the marks are divided as each question is broken onto several parts.
