Animal Husbandry and veterinary science is one of the many subjects which the Union Public Service Commission accepts for its civil services examination. Students can take this subject as one of their optional subjects in the main examination. Usually students who have studied this subject at the graduation level take up this subject. The subject can be scoring if prepared properly. The pattern of the examination of the subject is described below.

The exam is of duration three hours and the maximum marks are 300. The questions are all descriptive type. The question paper has two parts. Section A has four questions out of which question number 1 is compulsory. Similarly the second section also has four questions out of which the first question or question number 5 is compulsory. Students can answer any three questions taking at least one question from each section. The question paper is given in both English and Hindi. Students can answer in any of the two languages but it has to be specified before. The questions are divided in several parts. Usually the first question consists of short notes, each carrying 20 marks. Each question is of 60 marks.
