Central government appoints collectors in each district for handling various administrative purposes in a district. They are the highest government officials in a state. They are responsible for handling various tasks like revenue collection, taxation and law and order maintaining. They should have the control of planning permission. They are responsible for taking further steps in the case of man made or natural emergencies. Even though the collectors are appointed by central government, they are working under the supervision of state government.

Qualifying Exam

Candidates who aspire to become a collector should qualify the civil services exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission. They should first qualify the preliminary test called Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT). This preliminary test is common for all civil services IAS, IPS, IFS and IRS. Those who qualify in this test can attend the main exam and interview.

Who are eligible to apply?

Those who are applying for Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT) should be a citizen of India, Bhutan, Nepal or Tibet. The post of collector comes under Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Indian citizens can only work in India Administrative Service (IAS). Therefore the candidates who are applying for Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT) for becoming a collector should be an Indian citizen. Candidates who have completed their degree from central or state or deemed or open university are eligible to apply for this exam. Those who have completed degree through correspondence education or distance education are also eligible to apply for this exam. The age of the candidates applying for this exam should be between twenty one and thirty years. However relaxation in age limit is given for privileged candidates.

Skills required for a Collector

Collectors should possess good administrative skills to solve various law and order issues. They should have good leadership skills to coordinate their subordinates. They should have the ability to make quick decisions in the case of emergencies. They should also possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
