This university was established in the town of Nadiad, by the renowned parliamentarian and the active social worker of his time, Late Shri Dharmsinh Desai, who is also the founder of these groups of institutions. These institutions were the part of the welfare program that was setup by the Shri Dharamsinh Desai in the area. Apart from this university there were library, hospitals and other infrastructure built all around the town. This university was earlier just an affiliated institution by the name of Dharmsinh Desai Institute of technology that at that time just simple offered a degree and diploma in the field of chemical engineering as a single teaching area but over the time the university has grown its roots and its branches to reach the level it is at today. Moreover, the seeds of excellence that the university has sown over the time bore fruit in the 2000, when this institution was accredited as a deemed university by the UGC and finally the success story of the university got another star when in April 2005, the university got the acknowledgement as the state university by the Gujarat government.

The university has been operating upon the faculties it now maintains today and with these as the background it is able to run an army of the courses. These faculties include that of commerce, technology, management, information science, dental science and pharmacy. These faculties have been managing a number of undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral programs. Besides these programs the university also runs the certificate and diploma courses by itself. These major courses include BE/B.Tech, BBA, BCA, BDS, ME/M.Tech, MCA, MBA, B.Pharma etc. the institution in the courses is planning an extension of introducing the courses like MBBS of the medical science field and post graduate course in the field of pharmacy and dental sciences.

The admissions to the university are simple on the basis of the qualification of the equivalent qualifying exam which may be different for each course and the other invited application that may be submitted by the candidates to the university.
