Difference between Bachelor of Education(B.Ed.) and Master of Education(M.Ed.)

The B.Ed and M.Ed. programs, both are related to the teaching field. B.Ed is a degree that can be done after bachelor’s degree in arts, science and commerce. The master of education can be done after pursuing post graduation in any subjects. Although B.Ed and M.Ed. are the course to become a teacher they differ in many aspects.

Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)

Bachelor of Education is a degree awarded by most of the universities in India. Those who wish to become a teacher should pursue this degree. One can opt for this course after the successful completion of their bachelor’s degree. B.Ed is a must for a graduate to enter in teaching profession in schools. They can teach in various high schools as well as primary schools. The minimum qualification needed for a candidate to join in B.Ed is B.A, B.Sc. or B.Com. The arts graduates are trained in the subjects like geography, history, civics and languages. While the science graduates in physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology and the commerce graduates are trained in subjects like economics, accounting & finance, marketing & management. There are many career opportunities for the B.Ed graduates at present. They can find jobs in government and as well as private schools.

Master of Education (M.Ed.)

The Master of Education is an option after post graduation. This degree is also awarded by most of the universities in the country. M.Ed. can be done in different specializations such as counseling, administration and curriculum & instruction. The candidates are trained in specific subjects according to their preference. Those with M.Ed. qualification can become a lecturer in various institutions. Usually the minimum qualification required to join a M.Ed. course is master’s degree in any stream. These graduates can find many job opportunities in government and as well as private institutions.

Key differentiators between B.Ed. and M.Ed.

  • B.Ed. is the training for teaching post that can be done after B.A, B.Sc., and B.Com. Whereas M.Ed. is the teacher training that can be done after post graduation.
  • B.Ed graduates need to appear for the SET examination to become a teacher in government schools in the state. M.Ed. graduates can appear for NET to become a teacher or lecturer in schools or colleges anywhere in the country.

Although B.Ed and M.Ed. are related to teaching profession they are different in their own respect. B.Ed training can be done in related subjects but in M.Ed., candidates can specialize in various fields.
