If you select your optional as a public administration and sociology then you have to read all the ncert books from class 6th to 12th then you moved to advanced books which are referred by reports.

SIR,
I have taken sociology as my 1st optional for state civil service examination(ORISSA).I am preparing for the same by referring to the books by VIDYA BHUSHAN and SACHDEVA as well as the NCERT books.I want to know whether this is sufficient for the prelims or not.if not then kindly suggest me some more books for sociology as well as for general studies.

You can read Public Administration by Laxmikanth-TMH Publications.
And Indian Social System by Ram Ahuja.

These are excellent books for your optional subjects.

There is not a single book preffered for a particular subject since in a single book you may not get all the topics and if it is then probably some topics do not have extensive knowledge, which may be required for civil services examinations. I am naming the books for these two subjects:-
