Dear aspirant,
It never gives importance any specific degree.
It is your choice whatever degree you are willing to study just proceed with that and while applying for the exam you can just think of the subjects that were in your studies or you feel comfortable.

UPSC exam includes the optional papers from all types of undergraduate courses.

So, optional paper selection is in your hand.

Believe you can and you will on the half way.
Please do visit this website for your queries related to any entrance exam.
Best of luck

Re: Which degree is preferred for an IAS aspirants?

The UPSC has analyzed the success rates of candidates of various degrees in the 2009 Civil Services Exam. The annual report is available in their website.

From this, you will notice that among the UG candidates, the success rate is highest for MBBS with a percentage of 18.3. BDS is second with a success rate of 11.6%. BE/BTech, etc candidates had a success rate of 11.3%, while BSc Agri candidates came fourth at 11.1%.

Of course, the total no, of appeared candidates were quite less for MBBS and BDS at 420 and 69 respectively. There were 2267 candidates of BE, etc and 72 candidates of BSc Agri. These numbers relate to the main exam and do not have anything to do with the Prelims.

The success rate for BA was 5.0%, BCom 5.2% and BSc 4.4%.

If you take PGs, MD candidates had a marvellous success rate of 18.8% (3 out of 16) and LLM 13.8% (4 out of 29).

I think I have given a fair idea of who has more chances of selection. Please evaluate from your end. The details are available in p 98 of the Annual Report 2010-11 (which is the latest published by UPSC).

All the best.

dear friend,
My friend you want to become an IAS officer in future then you have to appear in IAS exam, which is conducted by UPSC every year..

Eligibility for IAS exam:------------

1.Candidate must have complete the graduation in any trade from a recognized university..
2.Final year candidates can also apply for the exam.
3.No percentage of marks is required.
4.Age should be in between 21-30 years.
For SC/ST the upper age relaxation is 5 years and for OBC the upper age relaxation is 3 years.
5.Candidate must be a citizen of India.

These are the minimum eligibility criteria you have to fulfill to appear in IAS exam..
So, you can go for any stream of your own choice for you graduation course..
You just have to complete your graduation , it does not matter that in which stream you have done your graduation.
So, don't bother about that..
All the best.

Re: Which degree is preferred for an IAS aspirants?

For becoming an IAS officer you must appear in an exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission commonly called as UPSC. For appearing in this exam the eligibility criteria required are as follows.

1. You must be a citizen of India.
2. You must have finished your graduation of any discipline from a recognized
university of India.
3. Your age must be above 21years and below 30years.

Thus for IAS aspirants there is no particular stream of Education required. Any graduation is enough. I would suggest you to choose any of the graduations easy for you to clear. So that you can prepare for the UPSC exams, which is little tougher.

Candidates belonging to every stream has been qualifying the Civil Service Examination in the past years. Engineers, Chartered Accountants, Commerce Graduate as well as Arts Graduate has been getting selected for the position of IAS officer and therefore, its difficult to suggest you any particular stream for your bachelors degree program.
Qualifying the examination depends upon the level or your preparation, level of your intelligence and level of your passion for the position. Civil Service Examination is considered to be one of the toughest examination in India and candidates who do exceptionally well , are only selected for Indian Administrative Services.
So, basically, you must stick with your strength and try to pursue you bachelors degree program in the field of your expertise. For Civil Service Examination, you will have to prepare separately.
If you want to crack the examination, you have got to be very good in the following subjects:
English
General Studies
Essay Writing

In order to prepare for these subjects, you should refer to the syllabus of each subjects, enroll yourself in a reputed coaching center offering civil service classes and you should also refer to previous year question papers, which can be obtained from the official website of Union Public Service Commission.
