IAS - Indian Administrative Services

IES - Indian Engineering Services

♦♦ IAS course and opportunities
:

The IAS Officers are employed in the administrative department of the Indian government. The Indian Administrative Service is the executive branch of the Indian Government. Candidates who are graduates from any university in India are eligible to apply for the IAS entrance exam. The officers of the IAS play an important role in managing the bureaucracy of both the Central and the State Government Those who qualify in the IAS can find employment in the fields of the Indian Revenue Service, the Indian Railway Service, the Indian Audit and Account Services etc.

♦♦ IES course and opportunities :

Indian Engineering Services belongs to the Technical Services department which comes under the technical and administrative functions of the Indian Government. The candidates are recruited on the basis of merit scored in the exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Candidates who are applying need to have a Degree in engineering or its equivalent to apply for this course. Those candidates who clear the written exam are then called for the interview by the board. The candidates who clear the IES entrance examination can find employment in the Indian Railway Engineering service (IERS), Military Engineering Service (MES), Central Engineering Service (CES) etc.

♦♦ Key difference between IAS and IES course :

The IAS is the administrative wing of the Indian Government. It comprises of administrative jobs like - Secretary to PM, CM, Aviation, Revenue etc. The IAS belongs to the All India Services category in the civil service, where as the IES is the Technical Services wing of the Indian Government. Though both are Government services, the former is the administration sector and the latter, the technical sector.

Difference Between IES and IAS Exam

The examination conducted for selection of the Indian Administrative Services is the Civil Services Examination and for the Indian Engineering Services the exam is Engineering Services Exam

Both the exams are conducted by the UPSC once a year..

Civil Service Exams :-

> The applicant must not be less than 21 years and should not be more than 30 years if belonging to general..

> The applicant should have completed graduation in any stream from a recognized institution..

Examination is conducted in 3 rounds :-

>> Preliminary Examination
>> Mains Examination
>> Personal Interview

Engineering Services Exams :-

> Applicant should have completed B.E/B.Tech in one of the following trades :-
1) Civil Engineering
2) Mechanical Engineering
3) Electrical Engineering
4) Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering

> Applicant should also be within 21-30 years of age..

There shall be the following tests which you will be facing :-

> General Ability Test
> 2 objective test papers
> 2 conventional papers

I think you are getting confused between the General Ability Test of IES and General Studies of IAS exam..

Both the papers are entirely different..

General Ability Test is meant to test your aptitude skills whereas the General Studies paper is the one where you need to be aware of the Indian Politics, History, Geography and many other things..

Hope your doubt is cleared but in case you still have any queries then you can visit http://upsc.gov.in to know more about both the exams..

all the best..

With Warm Regards
Nitz
