You need to pursue M.Sc. in Physics or a related subject and have a decent GATE score to be eligible for M.Tech at IITs. IITs may have a few self-financed seats for which the qualifying percentile in GATE may not be that stringent (in other words you may get selected with an average GATE score, albeit with a good performance at the interview).

Physics Hons students may pursue M.Sc and then move on to research by pursuing PhD in the Indian universities, IITs, IISERs, IISc, Central Reserach Institutes or even the Engineering Colleges of repute.

Nowadays, PhD research fellows are provided handsome fellowships by the government. They should clear GATE or NET exams. to avail the fellowships. Some institutes offer their own institute-fellowships.

Many Physics Honours students move over abroad after appearing at GRE and pursue PhD with teaching assistantships and research fellowships.

Physics Honours students go on to make a successful and satisfying career in many diverse fields in industry, and academics; such a wide choice is not available to engineers.

In my personal opinion, it is more worthwile to pursue B.Sc. in Physics Honours or the related subjects like Electronics Honours or Computer Science Honours, than go for a B.Tech. degree in any discipline and in any college, just for the sake of getting a B.Tech. degree.

Hope this helps. In this context you may also check out my edutainment portal at:

Eligibility For M.Tech in IIT

In order to do M.Tech from IIT..you need to clear the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam which is conducted every year for admission in M.Tech courses in India's top most institutions like IITs,NITs,IISc,BITS and many more..

In order to appear for GATE..you need to at least complete your M.Sc..only after that..you will be eligible for appearing in the GATE exam..

Sorry to say but generally..B.Tech graduates from decent colleges get a much better package than a B.Sc (Hons.) student..

So i would certainly advice you that after the completion of your M.Sc..you should go for GATE..

all the best..

With Warm Regards

Re: Can a graduate in B.Sc.(hons.) Physics apply for M.Tech from IIT?

hi,
no,after doing B.Sc(Hons) you can't apply for M.Tech in IITs, through the GATE exam.

for applying to M.tech you must complete the M.Sc course in Physics and then go for the GATE exam and by cracking that you can pursue M.Tech in the prestigious IITs..

see, knowledge has value in all aspects, whether you are a physics honors graduate or a B.Tech engineer,it does not matter.
the fact is that how much you know and how you can apply it in your work space.
so with physics honors you can pursue higher studies and can have a sound career!
i will suggest you to go for M.Sc first and then apply for GATE to study M.tech as this will make your career much better..
thanks

Re: Can a graduate in B.Sc.(hons.) Physics apply for M.Tech from IIT?

NO..,Direct after B.Sc. you can not apply for M.Tech. from IIT,to persue M.Tech. from IIT you have to do M.Sc. first and then after you can do M.Tech.

But if you want todo M.Tech. directly after B.Sc. you can do..but from Delhi University.

In Delhi University, there are three courses of M.Tech.
1. M.Tech. in Nuclear Science & Technology
2. M.Tech. in Nanotechnology
3. M.Tech. in Chemical Synthesis

if you want you can go for it.. all the best..

ELIGIBILITY FOR GATE

1. Bachelor degree holders in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture (4 years after 10+2) and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.
2. Master degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.
3. Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/ Technology or in the third or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master degree programme and Dual Degree programme in Engineering/ Technology.
4. Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognised by UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by IE(I), AMICE(I) by the Institute of Civil Engineers (India)-ICE(I)) as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.

So, you are not eligible for gate examination for now. You can appear GATE after your MSc.

Re: Can a graduate in B.Sc.(hons.) Physics apply for M.Tech from IIT?

Sorry but you are not eligible for GATE.

Minimum eligibility criteria for a general science graduate is that, candidate must have at least M.sc (In respective subject) with at least 60% aggregate.

Whereas for job opportunities you can not expect a better job just by having a bachelor degree in your hands. For a better and prosperous career you have to opt for master degree with further specialization like- M.sc (Electronics).

And yes B.Tech candidates have more job opportunities and better career prospect then a Bachelor in physics.
