Well you completed diploma course way back, I am not sure if you would be given admission for the B.Tech course after so many years. If you were really interested in studying B.Tech in Mechanical then you should have applied long time ago. You have wasted several precious years to apply for the B.Tech course.

The admission for B.Tech course after completing diploma is given through lateral entry scheme. Under this scheme candidates who have completed diploma in engineering or the B.Sc course can get admission in 2nd year of B.Tech course.

Most colleges offer lateral entry scheme in India. They reserve some percentage of seats for the lateral entry admission. It is generally between 10 to 20 percent. Admission for B.Tech through lateral entry is quite common however what I am concerend about is your age.

There is actually no specific age limit for the admission via lateral entry. The reason being different criteria of different universities for offering admission through lateral entry.

There are some universities which would give admission directly and have their own requirements. Usually they require at least 60 percent marks in diploma course to give admission. Some universities would give admission on 50 percent marks as well.

However some universities would require candidates to appear in entrance test. The most common test is LEET which stands for Lateral Engineering Entrance Test. However some universities prefer to conduct the entrance test on their own.

This is the reason why there is no specific age limit for the lateral entry. However what I have gathered is that 30 years is the maximum age on which a university would give admission through lateral entry. I am not sure how old are you. But since you completed diploma in 1993 I guess you would be around 30 years. Therefore there is very remote possibility of you getting admission for the B.Tech course. You should check out with some universities and see whether you are eligible or not. Good Luck.

I think it is the best option of opting Mechanical after Diploma in Automobile engineering. Both Diploma and Mechanical engineering are application oriented subjects only.
Plan a schedule for your daily routine. It should make feel comfort and happy with your daily routine too. Try to think everything in a practical way. It helps you a lot in understanding every thing given in the text book or explained by your teacher. All the best.
