Re: Is there any free coaching centre for IAS? I am from poor background

Hello divya,

coaching centers are privately taken therefore there is no such thing as free coaching. If you want coaching for Indian Administrative Service then you will have to pay for it.
It is not impossible to clear the Civil Service Examination by preparing on your own.
Now before you prepare for Civil Service Exam. It is very important to know about the exam pattern.

There are two steps to crash Civil Service Examination

1) Preliminary Exam

There are two papers in Preliminary Exams

1. General Studies - 150 marks

2. Optional Subject - 300 marks

It is important to know that in order to appear in final exam, you must pass the preliminary exam.

To prepare for General Studies, You should watch a lot of news and read newspapers to know what is happening all around you. There is no need to read every single news, just make sure to read all the important events.

You will also need to polish your English skills. It is very important that you have good command over the English language. But I will write about it in Main Exams preparation.

For optional subject , you will get several choice out of which you need to pick one subject. Generally candidates prefer to pick subject out of their graduation course. However some prefer subjects like Geography and History to pass out the Preliminary Exam. The choice is yours.

2) Main Examination

you will need to pass the Preliminary Exam to appear for the Main Examination. There would be nine papers in the Main Exam.

The first couple of papers would be related to English and one other Indian Language. Third paper is on essay, paper no 4 and 5 are on general studies while the remaining four papers would be on two optional papers that you will have to select.

Now since there would be a paper on English, it is important that you work on your grammar. You should read lot of English newspapers and watch English news channels to improve your English. There are also books you can use to improve English. Please remember that English language paper is just a qualification paper and its marks would not be counted in final tally.

The other paper would be on a Indian language. You will have various options to pick from. The idea behind both English paper and this paper is to check your command over the language. The marks of this exam too would not be added to the score. Here is the list of subjects.

Assamese

Bengali

Gujarati

Hindi

Kannada

Kashmiri

Konkani

Marathi

Malayalam

Manipuri

Nepali

Oriya

Punjabi

Sanskrit

Sindhi

Tamil

Telugu

Urdu

Essay writing is also very essential part of Main Exam. In the first three papers you will have to write an essay. I am sure you would not have any trouble writing essay in your local language but in English it could be an issue. You must refer to some good essay books for preparation. There are also several websites online that can help you out what this.

For the last 4 papers you once again need to pick two subjects. It would be wise to pick one subject that you picked for Preliminary Exam. For second subject, use the same method mentioned above.

Agriculture

Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science

Botany

Chemistry

Civil Engineering

Commerce

Economics

Electrical Engineering

Geography

Geology

Indian History

Law

Mathematics

Mechanical Engineering

Medical Science

Philosophy

Physics

Political Science

Psychology

Public Administration

Sociology

Statistics

Zoology

Now it is important for you to understand that there are minimum of 4 chances to clear the Civil Service Examination. Therefore even if you failed once, don't lose hope instead use it as an experience to prepare better for the next time.

My friend coaching centers are privately operated therefore there is no such thing as free coaching. If you want coaching for Indian Administrative Service then you will have to pay for it. It is as simple as that.

However what you can do is prepare for the IAS exam on your own. It is not impossible to clear the Civil Service Examination by preparing on your own. Several people have done that, especially from the poor background who are not in condition to afford coaching.

Now before you prepare for Civil Service Exam. It is very important to know about the exam pattern.

There are two stages of Civil Service Examination

There are two papers in Preliminary Exams

To prepare for various subjects in General studies you would need to take help of the books. For subjects like history and economics, read the 11th and 12th class books of NCERT. TO further polish your general knowledge, refer to books like General Knowledge Refresher by O.P. Khanna.

You will also need to polish your English skills. It is very important that you have good command over the English language. But I will write about it in Main Exams preparation.

Now since you have got the help for General studies, its time to focus of Optional subject. For this exam, you will get several choice out of which you need to pick one subject. Generally candidates prefer to pick subject out of their graduation course. However some prefer subjects like Geography and History to pass out the Preliminary Exam. The choice is yours.

2) Main Examination

Like I mentioned earlier, you will need to pass the Preliminary Exam to appear for the Main Examination. There would be nine papers in the Main Exam.

Give yourself realistic timeframe to prepare for the exam. At least 6 to 9 months are required to prepare for Civil Service Exam. Anything less than this would be putting too much pressure on yourself.

There are previous years papers available online that you should download and keep on solving after every few days. Give yourself exactly the same time which you are going to get for the Civil Service Exam. This would help you understand which are the areas where you need to do more work.
