paper-1 for 200 marks
it consist of GS:
Subject area:
Environment & Geography
General Science
Economic & Social Development
History of India
Indian Polity & Governance
paper-2 for 200 marks
subject area:
Comprehension

Re: Optional subjects in the IAS preliminary exam

Look every who want to choose optional subject for your civil service exam, should be clear of one thing that you should have to have a good command over that particular subject, atleast you should know the basics of that subject because a new start would be a bit trouble some because its new to you, so atleast choose that subject that you atleast understand or know the basics of that subject.

Please feel free ask any further questions or queries.

Thank you,

The below is the Strategy to appear in this Exam,

I'd decided not to attempt the exam unless I felt confident about my preparation. The syllabus of mains should be finished before prelims so that one may get enough time for revision and updating current affairs before mains. I had to learn the hard way the importance of effective writing, which is absolutely essential for success in this exam or for that matter success in life. Standard textbooks of both foreign and Indian authors can be referred to. In these papers, full details should be given in your answer with diagrams, graphs etc. In the third attempt I laid equal emphasis on GS and optionals and lady luck smiled and I was selected in the IAS.

Dear Friend,

There is no need to choose any optional subject for prelims as the UPSC board changed the syllabus and pattern of prelims examination. In the place of optionals UPSC introduced CSAT exam which is aptitude test.

So you need to prepare aptitude, reasoning, reading comprehension and English languages.

But the mains pattern remained same. You can select the optional from the range of optional subjects listed by UPSC::
Agriculture
Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science
Botany
Chemistry
Civil Engineering
Commerce
Economics
Electrical Engineering
Geography
Geology
Indian History
Law Mathematics
Mechanical Engineering
Medical Science
Philosophy
Physics
Political Science
Psychology
Public Administration
Sociology
Statistics
