Re: Is biotechnology and genetic engineering two different courses?

Yes both BIOTECHNOLOGY and GENETIC ENGINEERING are two different branches of science. But career options in these two are interrelated .

After doing a undergraduate course in biotechnology you can go for a specialization in genetic engineering to become a genetic engineer.

Basically genetic engineering is one of the applications where Biotechnological techniques are used.

The application of this branch of science are vast , in one hand it brings options in industrial sector such as:
Food and beverages industry
Textile industry
Biological products
Medicines and pharmaceuticals

On the other hand it is applicative in :
Agriculture
Animal husbandry
Nutrition and environmental conservation

CAREER GUIDE:

After 10+2 level (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and mathematics 55% aggregate) you can opt for undergraduate three to four year course in Biotechnology (BSc, BE, B.Tech) . Admission criteria differs in different institutions.
You can also opt for B.TECH/M.TECH integrated courses of 5years in biotechnology.
You can go for specialization in any subject in post graduate to get more vast and profitable biotechnology applications.

To become a genetic engineer must have a graduate/post graduate degree in genetics or related fields such as biotechnology, moleculer biology, etc Or a doctorate (phd )based on experience of own research.
Admission to these programs are through JEE(Joint entrance exam) for IIT's, AIEEE and in other institutions on the basis of other state level or national level exams.

Selection in post graduate (M.SC/M.TECH) are through GATE entrance exam.

Re: Is biotechnology and genetic engineering two different courses?

Biotechnology is a course in which application of biology are carried out,in which organism are modified, produced technically for the financial benefit.

Genetic engineering is a branch/application of biotechnology in which DNA or genes of an organism are manipulated according to requirement to get new products for financial benefit.

So,biotechnology and genetic engineering belong to same course in which genetic engineering is studied in biotechnology.

Re: Is biotechnology and genetic engineering two different courses?

No,Biotechnology and genetic are not different cources.Genetic comes under biotechnology cource.

Biotechnology courses is based on the subjects in health and medicine, agriculture and animal husbandry, cell biology, ecology, soil conservation science, physiology of plants, biostatistics etc.

In the field of Biotechnology, students could become as a scientist in the areas of Human health, pharma, animal health, animal husbandry, dairy, chemical and biochemical, food processing etc.

A biotechnology course includes a Biochemistry,Genetics,Microbiology,Chemistry, Virology, Immunology and Engineering.

The factors that are responsible for increasing scope of biotechnology are as follow--

Mammal species----7.6%
Bird species--- 12.6%
Fish species--11%
Flowering plants--- 6%
