To be an IAS officer you will have to qualify Civil Services Examination.

The examination is conducted in two stages.
1. Civil Services Preliminary examination or CSAT.
It is common for everyone.
The syllabus and sample paper of preliminary examination have been attached with
this message.

2. Main Examination and Interview: Basically the pattern of Main examination is
same as earlier.
Those who qualify the Preliminary exam will be called for Main examination and on the
basis of performance in main exam candidates will be called for Interview.
The total marks obtained in Main exam and Interview will be added to prepare final merit list.
The Main examination will contain following papers
1. Essay type Indian Language Qualifying Paper (300 marks)
2. English Qualifying Paper (300 marks)
3. General Essay type paper (200 marks)
4. General Studies (Paper-I & II 300 marks each)
5. Optional subject-I(Paper-I & II 300 marks each)
6. Optional subject-II(Paper-I&II 300 marks each)

The subject for optional paper are as under.
You can choose any two of them. The choice is completely your.

Commerce and Accountancy

Hi dear,
"Prepare for the battle, the more you practise, the less you bleed in battle"

Well IAS exam is the toughest exam in this country but a strong will and hard determination is enough to bolster this nut.

In a nutshell focus on your objective, prepare the general awareness section, general studies and improve your communication skills as this will be very much instrumental in your interview.

Refer Hindu, Pratiyogita Darpan, frontline, CSR refreshers,NCERT texts for more better results...

you can also go for some coaching classes and take mock interviews...
here are the books i am concerning for better preparation

to clear the civils exam you havve to pass through two exams

1. prelims

in this there are two papers, one is general studies and the other is an aptitude paper.
2. for th mains exam along with general studies and an indian language paper you have to choose two optioal subjects from the follwing list of subjects

IAS Exam

IAS i.e CSAT Preliminary examinations

It Consists of Two parts

a) General studies
b) Optional subject

General Studies Consists of Current events,History,Geography, Indian Polity and governance,Economic and Social development and General science.

Below are the Subjects through Which out of 25 you can Choose any One and you can Prepare according to your Previous Studies.

The study you have achieved till for that Subject is Sufficient enough.

UPSC Preliminary Examination - Optional Subjects

General Studies,Agriculture,Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science,Botany,Chemistry,Civil Engineering,Commerce,Economics,Electrical Engineering,Geography,Geology,Indian History,Law,Mathematics,Mechanical Engineering,Medical Science,Philosophy,Physics,Political Science,Psychology,Public Administration,Sociology,Statistics,Zoology

Just have an up to date knowledge on current affairs of our country. School History books, mathematics books will also helps you a lot.

Minimum education criteria = Graduate

He/She should be 21years to 30 yrs of age at the time of appearing

This time UPSC pattern is changed and it is called as CSAT which is coming into effect from Civil Services Examination, 2011.and so there is no option subjects...


It consits of two paper and each paper of Two hrs..


(Paper 1) (200 marks) consists of
  • Current events.
  • History
  • Geography
  • Indian Polity and governance
  • Economic and social development
  • and General science.

It is of purely objective type and qualifying exam...

(Paper II) (200 marks)
  • Comprehension
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision making and problem solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy(Class X level)
  • English language comprehension skills (Class X level)

It is of purely subjective type and followed by interview....

In comprehension subjective paper following are the optional subject you can choose any one of it
