It is no where mentioned that Hindi is a mandatory subject for Upsc and other government exams.
Also you are given a choice to write the exams in your mother tongue too.
The eligibility criteria mentioned in Upsc is that the candidate should have completed bachelor's degree from a recognised Indian University.
Same is the case WID NDA and other government careers where the basic eligiblity is a degree.
So your son can happily drop Hindi for French subject.

As far as you are concerned about the compulsion of Hindi as a main subject in Class 10th to be eligible for appearing in NDA or Civil Services examination then there is no such requirement as for appearing in the same examination any Class 12th (or graduation degree in case of Civil Services examination ) are eligible.

So, even opting for french as his language subject for Class 9th or further studies, your son will be eligible for appearing in the mentioned examination provided you satisfy its eligibility conditions.

For details regarding the Civil Services examination or NDA entrance examination, you can refer to the link www.upsc.gov.in.

No, it is not mandatory to have Hindi as main paper in 10th to appear for the NDA or Civil Service Examination.

The required qualification is that candidate must have passed bachelor degree in any discipline for a recognised university for appearing in Civil Service Examination.

Candidates pursuing in 12th are eligible for NDA examination.

For age limit and syllabus of the examination visit at www.upsc.gov.in.

My son wants to drop Hindi and take French in Class 9th and 10th. Does he needs to study Hindi in class 10th to appear in UPSC exams like Civil Services and NDA? Or, he can manage with French also?
