Civil Engineering is a good option for choosing it for civil services exam. It is very much scoring provided you have enough knowledge about it.

It is better to take if only if you have graduation related to civil engineering. In fact it is best to take civil engineering as optional subject in that case. Scoring in civil services from civil engineering is very much favorable.

But if you have no civil engineering back ground then you must not take a chance and you should prepare for some other optional subject like
Economics,
Geography,
Geology,
History,
Philosophy,
Political Science,
Public Administration,
Sociology, etc.

THANKS

When you will be selecting optional for CSE, keep this in mind:
You cannt take two engineering optionals like physics or maths with civil engg.
Try to opt for one administrative subject like political science or public administration etc.

Regarding civil engg, although its ok , but not many civil engg opt for this , due to large content & time consuming, on the other hand arts subjects can be prepared in much less time.
But if you really fond of civil, then dont change your optional because its general perception that electrical engg is low scoring subject but still in 2009 2nd ranker opted for this subject only because he was confident of it.

For Civil service exam..
In comprehension subjective paper following are the optional subject you can choose any one of it
  • Agriculture
  • Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science
  • Anthropology
  • Botany
  • Chemistry
  • Civil Engineering
  • Commerce and Accountancy
  • Economics
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Geography
  • Geology
  • History
  • Law
  • Management
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Medical Science
  • Philosophy
  • Physics
  • Political Science and International
  • Relations
  • Psychology
  • Public Administration
  • Sociology
  • Statistics
  • Zoology

and since you are civil engineer you need to choose only that option as that is your field...coming to scoring yes all subjects are having equivalent of scoring but since that is your field and in future after selection also you need to work on that only....so choose civil as optional and give your best...
