You can access 'www.upsc.gov.in' for details. The CS exam is a three stage exam divided into _Preleminary exam which is objective type and roughly ten times the candidates as per the vacanices are called for the second stage exam Mains which is descriptive type carrying 2000 marks and finally the interview of shortlisted candidates carrying 300 marks. The final merit list is prepared on the basis of total 2300 marks (2000 for Mains + 300 fr Interviews). Any leading book publisher in your area should be having the relevant books and study material required for preparing for the Civil Services. Further, it is the main text books of your Optional that are the most important for studying for the optional papers. If you still find it difficult to have adequate study material, try the option of enrolling for coaching through correspondence from some reputed Coaching Centers such as Brilliants. However, do keep in mind that there is no substitute for a planned, systemic preparation spanning 1-2 years for this prestigious exam.

Notification for IAS 2012 examination has not been published yet. However, the candidates for the 2012 IAS Exam should not wait for the notification and should start studying for the exam.

Start with the NCERT books; these books give you the basics of the different GS subjects. Read them thoroughly; while reading underline the important points. Always practice the previous year’s question papers along with studies. Do not wait till you cover your syllabus; previous year’s questions practice should go hand in hand with daily studies. Read newspapers daily to update yourself with current affairs. Visit current affairs site on internet to read news items in prepared notes form.

You can focus on the important areas of the syllabus for the IAS 2012 once the syllabus is published in the IAS 2012 notification.

Re: How should I study for IAS? For how many years should I study the course?

Hello friend,
For Indian Administrative Service, you have to appear for civil service exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission.
To be eligible for the exam, you must be a graduate within the age limit of 21-30 years. The maximum age limit is relaxed upto 5 years for SC/ST and upto 3 years for OBC.
The civil service exam is one of the toughest exam in India and hence it requires passion, dedication and proper planning.
The selection process comprises three stages.
Civil Service Aptitude Test-CSAT
Main Exam
Interview
One should prepare as per the syllabus of the examination. The CSAT will have two papers and both of them will be compulsory. In the main exam, you will have both compulsory and optional papers.
The ideal time to prepare for the exam is the final year of your bachelors degree program. This is the time when you should be able to decide the optional subjects.
To get selected as an IAS officer, qualifying civil service exam is not enough. You have to be among the highest rank holders.
If you are smart, intelligent, passionate and dedicated towards your goal, you can definitely be one of them.
Since the first stage of the civil service exam is CSAT, you have to qualify it to move on to the next stages. To do well in this test, you just need to follow the syllabus and prepare accordingly.
CSAT SYLLABUS
Paper 1
Current events of national and international importance
History of India and Indian national movement
Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world
Indian Polity and governance – constitution, political system, panchayati raj, public policy, Rights issues, etc.
Economic and social development – sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives etc.
General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change
General science.

Paper 2

General mental ability

Re: How should I study for IAS? For how many years should I study the course?

according to to qualify the IAS exam you should join in any of the good coaching institute for the IAS like in the south delhi or hyderabad
they would provide the sufficient material and practice papers that would be more than enough
and even you can purchase the book and sample papers of the IAS exam from the book shop that would be even beneficial
stick to the syllabus of the IAS exam and follow that
it totally depends on you how much is your capacity to study the whole course of the IAS exam if you can complete it in one year than that is well and good
but for your informantion you can have only 4 attempts at the IAS exam in your lifetime (for general students)

Re: How should I study for IAS? For how many years should I study the course?

Civil Service, the backbone of the Indian government machinery constitutes all the departments which runs the State administration. A highly competitive and challenging area, it involves a variety of jobs in different departments.

Compared to private sector jobs this profession has job security. The prestige and power that comes along with these top-notch jobs is a definite reason for anybody to join this profession. The salary, allowances and facilities like healthcare, housing, conveyance etc. also make it a lucrative profession.

My friend ,first check out the eligibility criteria and only after that think about how many years you will have to study.
