You can choose public administration or geography subjects as the optional subject as they will be helpful in further life also.

Re: Which second optional subject should I choose for UPSC exam?

Remember, whatever background you have come from, it is not that you have to choose subjects from that background too.

You can choose subjects in which you have good knowledge, no matter whether it is your course subject or.

Be confident what you choose...

You should those subjects in which you can score good marks.

those subjects which you love to learn and have very much interest.

So if you have chosen physics and interested in choosing Mathematics, then you should choose Maths...
Other than maths you can also choose chemistry or statistics(if you are strong in it or love to learn them)

Re: Which second optional subject should I choose for UPSC exam?

there are a list of optional subject in UPSC civil service main examination. you have to choose two subject from that. here is the list of subjects-

Agriculture
Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science
Anthropology
Botany
Chemistry
Civil Engineering
Commerce and Accountancy
Economics
Electrical Engineering
Geography
Geology
History
Law
Management
Mathematics
Mechanical Engineering
Medical Science
Philosophy
Physics
Political Science and International
Relations
Psychology
Public Administration
Sociology
Statistics
Zoology

now you choose Physics as you first optional subject. i think as you are choosing physics so you are from science stream. so you have to choose one from mathematics and chemistry. no one generally choose mathematics it does not true. if you are good enough and if you are confident enough that you can do mathematics well then obviously you will choose mathematics as your second optional subject in civil service main examination. but if you are not strong in mathematics then you may choose chemistry.

here i am attaching the notification for civil service examination 2011. go to the attachment for all details about civil service examination. visit UPSC official website http://www.upsc.gov.in for more information.

best wishes.
