IITJEE is an entrance exam for admission in IITs.
Last year , the the examination pattern was changed. Earlier there used to be only one exam, but now there are two exam . Also, the eligiblity criteria to appear for JEE was 60% in 12th class, but now you have to be in top 20 percentile of the respective board in different states/CBSE/ICSE.

Now first you have to appear for JEE Main . After clearing this only you can go for JEE Advanced. 1,50,000 students are selected in this round. There is also reservation in this lot.

After this , JEE Advanced , on the basis of which final ranking is announced .

You can attempt JEE two times only , that too in consecutive years. You can be either 12th appearing/passed.

JEE Mains is the engineering entrance exam one must give to entering any engineering college in the country which takes this particular score under considerations.
All government affiliated colleges take a combination of your JEE Mains and your 12th standard board exams into consideration before admission.
JEE Advanced is the engineering entrance exam that solely decides your entrance in the best engineering colleges i.e IIT.

JEE mains and JEE advanced are conducted by two different governing bodies.

JEE mains is the screening test for JEE advanced i.e. you must have to pass in JEE mains to be eligible for JEE advanced.

JEE mains is the entrance exam for admission in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs while JEE advanced is the entrance exam for admission in the prestigious IITs.
