The topics are inclusive of memory management, CPU scheduling, deadlock, mutual exclusion, networking, file systems, distributed computing and processes. Process concepts and operations, process states and process control are integral parts. Also file organization like blocking, buffering and paging are very important in this respect. Processor scheduling, processes hierarchies, synchronization, conditional critical regions, message passing, deadlock detection and prevention, scheduling algorithm and banker algorithm, virtual memory concepts and address mapping come together to form an integrated syllabus of the academic discipline. Extra knowledge in secondary storage systems is optional.
