Garhbeta College had its humble beginning in the year 1948 on the 13th of August with just 50 students. The college began to function from Banerjee Danga High School and the college shifted to its present permanent building in the year 1950, which is spread over an area of 22 acres of land. The whole campus of the college is provided with wide range of infrastructural facilities.

Right from its inception, the college was affiliated to the Calcutta University and was initially offering arts and commerce courses at the intermediate level. The college began to offer degree courses in arts stream from the year 1957, later science courses were introduced in the year 1962 and commerce course was introduced from the year 1982. After the establishment of Vidyasagar University, the college was brought under this university from the year 1985.

The college also offers a vocational course and the name of this course is Office Management & Secretarial Practice. It also offers Bachelor of Physical Education, which is a professional course approved by the National Council of Technical Education and the Vidyasagar University.
