Hematopathology, which is also called as Haematology Pathology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diseases in the hematopoietic cells. DM in Hematopathology is a three-year multi-specialty course in the field of medicine offered by a few colleges in India. The names of government colleges offering this course in India are given below:

Eligibility requirements:

For applying to the DM in Hematopathology course, candidates must have completed their MD in pathology after completion of the MBBS with internship from an institution recognized by the Medical Council of India.

Admission Procedure:

The above-mentioned colleges have both sponsored and general seats for the DM in Hematopathology course and admission of students are made through entrance examination conducted by the appropriate institutions.

Course Curriculum:

As mentioned earlier, the duration of DM in Hematopathology course is three years. The training period of 36 months is divided into 21 months for laboratory training, nine months for clinical hematology, three months rotation period in allied specialty and three months of elective posting. Some of the subjects offered in the DM in Hematopathology course are:

Introduction to laboratory hematology

Introduction to clinical hematology

Allied specialties like biostatistics and nuclear medicine

Principles of nuclear medicine

Disorders of erythrocytes

Disorders in white cells

Disorders in hemostasis and thrombosis

What are the diseases dealt by DM In Hematopathology specialists?

Candidates who have completed their DM in Hematopathology become specialist in treating diseases pertaining to hematopoietic, which might either be congenital or hereditary disorders and even acquired disorders. The first two disorders might include primary immune deficiency syndromes and bone marrow failure syndromes, while the acquired disorders might be pertaining to nutritional deficiencies like B12 deficient, folate and iron anemias and neoplastic disorders.

Future of Hematopathology:

The dawn of 20th century opened a new era in the science of Hematology and right from this century this field of medicine is seeing very good progress with respect to treatments. It studies right from the role of food on blood production to accurate blood transfusions to the study of anemia. Parallel inventions in biochemistry, nutrition and other fields of medicine saw this field flourishing as an independent branch of medicine. This field is expected to grow further with the introduction of different types of new medicines and therefore, candidates with DM in Haematology pathology/Hematopathology can have a very good growth prospects.
