MDS Orthodontics is a PG course in the field of dental studies and it was the first specialty to be introduced in the PG dental courses. This field is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions, the meaning of this term in colloquial language is improper bites, which might be due to the disproportionate jaw relationships, tooth irregularity or both.

Syllabus covered under MDS Orthodontics:

The aforesaid government colleges are approved by the Dental Council of India and these colleges offer courses in the form of seminars, practical, clinical training, dissertation and case presentation to the students belonging to MDS course. The method of coaching followed under each of these categories is explained below:

Seminars:

Seminars in the subjects like corrective orthodontics development of orthodontic techniques and appliances, interceptive and preventive orthodontics, cephalometrics, radiology, etiology of malocclusions, normal occlusion and variation, etc…for students belonging to MDS Orthodontics course.

Practical classes:

Dental council also requires that the college should offer practical training to the students by making them to prepare orthodontic study models, fabrication of complete appliances and fabrication of different components of fixed and removable appliances.

Clinical Training:

Clinical training includes preparation of appliances and case records and treatment of different types of malocclusions by different mechanisms.

Dissertation:

Dissertation is nothing, but preparation of thesis papers.

Case Presentation:

Case presentation involves preparation of completed records of a minimum of five fully treated cases by the students.

Eligibility for seeking admission to the MDS Orthodontics course:

For seeking admission to the MDS Orthondontics course, candidates must have completed their UG Degree in dental surgery from a DCI approved institution and they should clear the entrance examination for PG dental courses conducted in the appropriate states. They should also have completed their internship programme at the end of the BDS course.

The Orthodontic Societies in India:

The Orthodontic Society of India came into existence in the year 1965 The Academy of Fixed Orthodontics (AFO) came into existence in the year 2008 and this academy represent members from other dental societies are well in addition to orthodontics. The general dentist practitioners can take up the certificate course in Fixed Orthodontics offered by AFO. Candidates, who have completed their Master’s degree in orthodontics from the aforesaid colleges are permitted as members of Indian Orthodontic Society since these colleges are approved by the Dental Council of India. Taking the membership from AFO and Orthodontic Society will be of great use to the MDS orthodontics candidates for their future prospects.
