Animal Husbandry sector plays a crucial role in the socio-economic development of the nation and apart from offering nutritional food at affordable cost, the sector is widely helpful in generating gainful employment opportunities in the rural areas, specifically to marginal and small farmers, landless laborers and women by supplementing their family income. Livestock act as the best insurance against the unpredictable changes taking place in the nature like famine, drought and other natural calamities.

Government organizations in the Animal Husbandry Sector:

State governments in India contribute lion’s share towards the development of animal husbandry sector. However, the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries has however, been operating 30 central livestock organizations and allied institutions for manufacture and distribution of high quality germ plasma to the state governments for genetic upgradation and cross breeding of the stocks. Apart from this, the central government department has been implementing centrally sponsored schemes for the growth of required infrastructure and complementing the efforts of the state governments to achieve growth of this sector. Educational qualification:

For getting jobs in the animal husbandry sector, candidates must have completed their Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry from a recognized institution or university.

In addition to the government jobs, animal husbandry sector offers a wide range of self-employment opportunities and according to a report submitted by the National Sample Survey Organization, the estimate of employment status in this sector was 11.01 million in subsidiary status and 11.44 million in principal status, which is 5.5% of the total working population of the country.
