The body responsible for conducting GMAT (Graduate Management Admission test) is US-based Pearson VUE. It is carried out on the direction of the Graduate Management Admission Council. It is a world wide organization of graduate business schools. Any candidate wishing to aspire in the business and management studies is eligible for writing GMAT. This test is conducted basically to examine the candidate’s verbal, analytical and mathematical skills. There are over 900 business schools all over the world. Most of these schools are in the US.

Structure and Syllabus of GMAT

The duration of GMAT test is 210 minutes. It consist of three sections

Analytical Writing

Candidates have to attend a written examination. Each topic has to be answered within 30 minutes.

  • Analysis of an issue
  • Analysis of an argument

Quantitative Section: The total time allotted for this particular section is 75 minutes. It consists of 37 objective type questions.

  • Data Sufficiency.
  • Problem solving

Verbal Section: In this section 41 objective type questions have to be attended within 75 minutes.

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Sentence Correction
  • Critical Reasoning

Being a computer based test most of the questions will be based on level of candidate. Suppose a candidate is scoring well then the level of difficulty will increase according to his potential. If a candidate is not scoring well then the level of the question becomes easier.

The pattern of the exam is such that it tests the maximum level of a candidate’s skill in all the three parts. This test is highly prestigious and most of the business schools give admittance on this. Fee structure is same throughout the world. It is US$250. Candidates may have to pay fine if they postpone the test.

Eligibility Criteria

There is no particular requirement regarding age. Individuals who aspire to join Business schools worldwide are eligible to appear for GMAT. There are a number on institution and schools which give admittance to students on basis of their GMAT score.

How to Apply?

There are various methods to register for GMAT. First one is through online method. Forms can be purchased online by visiting their official website. Credit card payment is accepted. Students who wish to apply through fax or mail can also do the same. Candidates should carefully go through all the points and then only submit the application form. One can also register for GMAT by calling 0120-4324628. This phone number is applicable for student belonging to India. Those who wish apply through postal method can sad their application to the given address.

How to fill the Form?

In order to choose the centre of examination in India, students need to get a GMAT Application Scheduling Form. It can de obtained through fax or mail or courier or through phone. In the application form Country code and Site ID number should be filled.

Application forms should be sent 3 weeks prior to the date of entrance test. A confirmation letter of appointment will be send to the candidates once the forms are successfully submitted. This form will be having all the necessary informations like time and date of test, centre of appointment. Those who do not receive an appointment of test prior to 3 days of chosen date for test can call VUE Customer Service Center for confirmation of their appointment.

Important Dates

The examination dates for GMAT are not fixed. This test is conducted on national level. One can select the examination dates according to his/her choice. Mostly students choose to appear for GMAT test by the end of the year. If a candidate wishes to appear for GMAT from September to December then, it is required to register 3 months prior to their choice of date. While in other cases it is enough to register 15 days prior to the examination date.

Study Plan

GMAT exams are conducted online. Since most of the students have not attended any online examination it may be difficult for them. It is better to download few questions papers from the net and practice an online exam before attending GMAT. This would help to increase student’s confidence in them.

Number of GMAT test is available on net. Out of these most of them are interactive sessions Experienced persons and professional will help and guide the candidates to solve the paper at the earliest.

Candidates can also enroll in some training center which specializes in GMAT. There are tutors as well as trained instructors available to help and guide. In order to improve your test skill and increase your general knowledge candidates should attend mock test regularly. Revision will also be very helpful.

Practice over the computer: Since GMAT is an online test, it is different from other types of test. Students who do not have any practice of attending an online test may find it difficult to read and understand the question. There fore good practice is very important to qualify for the exam.

Work on basic concepts for quantitative section: Quantitative section holds 37 questions. The duration of this test is 75 minutes. The portions are based on data sufficiency and problem solving. So to qualify in this level candidates should have a strong mathematics background.

Develop reading skills: Verbal section is mainly based English comprehension. One has to develop his/her reading and analyzing skill to do qualify in English. There is no particular syllable for this section.

Take online lessons: Candidates can take online tips through different programmes available on net.

How and Where To Get the Results?

Candidates Verbal and Analytical scores will be immediately known after the online test. Official result will be sent to students and five other designated institutions almost two weeks after the online test. Candidates from United States have to wait for few more days to get their score after the test.

Expected sectional cutoffs

The average cutoff in GMAT is expected to be from 700 onwards. However some of the highly competitive institutes have increased their cot off range to 800 and above

Score Validity

GMAT scores have validity up to five years .But it is wise not to have a GMAT score of more than 2years.
