How to Prepare for the Combined Defence Service Exam?
The Combined Defence Services Exam is UPSC to recruit the candidates for officer’s post in Army, Air Force and Navy. The candidates who have cleared the exam will send to defence training institutes for training. The training institutes are placed in Hyderabad, Goa, Dehradun and Chennai. A hefty number of candidates appear for this exam every year.
Structure of the Exam
The CDS exam consists of 2 stages which are written test and interview. The written test pattern is different for each institute. The written exam for Naval Academy, IMA and the AFA consists of three papers. All the three papers carry multiple choice objective type questions. Each paper carries maximum of 100 marks and duration of each paper is 2 hours.
The Questions are from General English and Elementary Mathematics. The written test for officers training academy consists of two papers and each paper carries 100 marks. The duration of each paper is two hours.
Syllabus of the Exam
The English paper is used to test the candidate’s language knowledge and how they make use of words in writing essays. This will also covers reading comprehension, synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases, prepositions, articles, etc. The General knowledge section is used to check the candidate knowledge on current events, everyday observation and experience in the scientific features. Furthermore, they should know about global and Indian geography, Indian economic and polity and the constitution of India.
The Elementary mathematics will cover the syllabus of algebra, arithmetic, statistics, trigonometry, profit and loss, percentage, numbers, etc. The candidate will be put to both oral and written test. They will also put to group discussion. The candidate must read news papers and periodicals to develop their communication ability and general knowledge. They can study elementary maths from 10th and 12th standard books. There are lots of model question papers and previous year question papers available in the online. They can practice these question papers and model papers. For language skills, there are many guides available in the market. They can refer this book and practice online tests.
