IAS Officer - How to become an IAS Officer?

Advertisements

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recruits to various administrative services like IAS and IPS depending on a candidate’s performance in the Civil Services Examination. IAS officers play key role in both the Central and State Government. They hold the most important posts across the country. To dream of becoming an IAS officer is easy; the effort that needs to be put in order to achieve that dream is what counts and what will help achieve that dream.

Qualifying Exam

As mentioned above, a candidate has to take the Civil Services Exam. The notification for the exam usually appears in all leading news papers, the Gazette of India and in the Employment News in December of the previous year. The application form and the information brochure for the exam are available at post offices or head post offices across the country. Information on application forms and test centers will be available in the ad coming out. The filled form along with the acknowledgement card has to be sent to The Secretary, Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur.

The exam can be broken down into three

  1. Preliminary exam (held in May/June)
  2. Main exam (held in October/November)
  3. Interview

The preliminary exam consists of two objective type questions papers. The first paper would deal with General Studies and the second one with the selected optional subjects. (Details of these subjects will be available in the information brochure). The main exam has a total of nine papers. The first two papers are English and an Indian language. The third paper is an essay paper. The fourth and fifth are general studies. The remaining four are on any two of the selected optional subjects (two papers on each subject). The interview calls usually come out in March-April and the actual process happen in April-May. The brochure has to be referred carefully while selecting subjects as there are certain combinations that are not allowed.

Who is eligible to apply

  • Citizenship - Indian
  • Age Limit – 21-30 as on 1st of August of the year of examination. There are relaxations in the upper age limit in cases like SC/ST, OBC candidates, etc
  • Qualification – Degree holder from any university in the country. Final year students, awaiting results are also eligible.
  • No. of attempts – 4. It is 7 in the case of OBCs and no limit for SC/STs.

How to prepare for exam and interview

Focus is very important. Prepare a feasible timetable. The candidate has to be well informed on current affairs in all sectors. Newspapers and materials like Competition Success Review will help. Reading helps dealing with the language well. Make good use of the dictionary when coming across unfamiliar words. These things would help with the General Studies paper.

Be careful when selecting optional subjects. Select subjects that you are confident in and for which the study material is readily available. Practice a lot. For essays, be careful not to divert from the topic. Flowery words and no subject matter do not help.

The English and the language papers test your command over them. They consist of comprehension, précis writing, vocabulary and short essay. There is also translation in the case of the language paper. Interviews help the board understand the personality of the candidate. Be modest, honest and respectful towards the panel. Keep in mind that the panel has had a lot of experience in conducting such interviews. We may be ignorant on a topic but they aren’t. Understand the question well. Taking a minute or two to answer is better than later regretting the answer you gave. Give unbiased and precise answers. Do not be argumentative. Book knowledge alone does not help in interviews; mental alertness will also be tested. Mock interviews will help a lot.
