Indira Gandhi Government College came into existence in the year 1986 and the college holds the pride of being the third largest college in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. The college meets the educational requirements of the people belonging to six districts of the state.

Development of the college:

The college began its operations in the building of District Industries Centre with just five departments, eight faculty members and 42 students, then it was shifted to another building of Navodaya Vidyalaya and later to its present own campus spread over 210 acres of land in the year 1995. Over these years the college has grown both qualitatively and quantitatively with the introduction of commerce stream in the year 2004. During the academic year 2009-10, the college had a student-strength of 1500 and faculty strength of 27 members.

Courses offered:

Indira Gandhi Government College is offering the following courses with affiliation from Rajiv Gandhi University, which was previously called as Arunachal University

Bachelor of Arts (pass and honors) in

o Political science

o History

o Hindi

o Geography

o Economics

Bachelor of Commerce (pass and honors)

In addition to these, the college has introduced education department recently and courses are still to begin in this department. All the first year students of the college are offered with a compulsory course of Certificate in Environmental Studies.

Eligibility Criteria:

For seeking admission to the Bachelor of Arts (pass) courses, candidates must have completed their AISSCE 10+2 or equivalent examination with English as a compulsory subject. For Bachelor of Commerce (general) course, candidates must have secured not less than 40% of marks in the AISSCE examination.

For Honors course in Bachelor of Arts, candidates must have completed their Part I university exam with not less than 45% of marks, relaxation of 5% of marks is offered to APST students. For Bachelor of Commerce Honors, candidates must have secured 45% (40% for APST students) as aggregate in four papers being business organization, principles of economics, financial accounting and office procedures.

Facilities at the college:

Indira Gandhi Government College has library with a collection of more than 15000 books, 17 classrooms, laboratory for geography department, computer centre, sufficient sports facilities, playground, boys’ and girls’ hostels, staff quarters, audio-visual equipments, a post office, canteen, students recreation room and study centres of Rajiv Gandhi University and IGNOU to offer courses through distance education. The college also arranges for educational excursion and travel concession to the students.
