Law Assistant – How to become a Law Assistant?


Law Assistants are responsible for collecting relevant facts needed for criminal and civil cases. Their job also includes assimilating research materials regarding case law and statute law. If they are employed in any court, then they have to work under the judge of the concerned court. They should assist the judge in the court, court library and even in judge’s residence (if necessary). Railways also recruit law assistants to assist in various cases which come up before railway tribunal benches.

Qualifying Exam

To practice as a Law Assistant in any court, one should have a Bachelor’s degree in Law. Even so, Master’s degree in Law is also considered as the desired educational qualification needed to employ as a Law Assistant. Candidates should ensure whether they had obtained these degrees from a university approved by Bar Council of India. The court will allow only such candidates to practice as a Law Assistant. Apart from the qualifying degree, it is mandatory that the candidates should perform well in the selection process specified by the concerned authority.

Who are eligible to apply?

As said above, Graduation or Post graduation in Law is compulsory to attend the selection process conducted for the recruitment of Law Assistant. Candidates having better computer skills will be given weightage by the recruiting board. Notification for the enrollment of Law Assistant will be published by the concerned authority. Interested candidates can take part in those recruitments by forwarding their applications according to the procedure specified in the concerned notification. If the concerned authority accepts those applications, then the candidates should attend an interview (on a specified date). Performance in the interview will decide whether the candidates are suitable for the post of Law Assistant.

Obviously, they need good writing skills to prepare relevant documents. Exceptional investigative skills are preferred in these professionals so as to handle legal matters effectively.
