The Dravidian University was formed in the year 1997 on the 20th of October by the Andhra Pradesh State Government with the support extended by the state governments of the southern Indian States namely Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The university is situated at Kuppam in the district of Chittor and the university is formed for the purpose of achieving an integrated development in Dravidian Languages.

Kuppam is a tri-lingual junction in the state of Andhra Pradesh at the south-western part of the state. Initially in the year 1998, the university began to function with two departments and now the university has seven research institutes and 21 departments. The campus of the university is popularly known as Srinivasavanam and it is standing as a proof of blend of modernity and tradition.

The university was established mainly with the objective of inculcating the spirit of national integration with tools like publication, translation, lecture and research. The list of colleges affiliated to the university is given below:

The Government of Andhra Pradesh gifted the university with a land extending an area of 1093 acres under the leadership of the then Chief Minister of the state. Among the languages used all over the world, the Dravidian family of languages takes the pleasure in enjoying a special place due to their ancient origin.

The family of Dravidian languages constitutes 27 languages and these languages have contributed to the oneness of the Indian Culture and Dravidian University was formed mainly for the purpose of developing the privilege of these languages. Some of the important languages belonging to Dravidian family are Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu. It can be explained as a university with a distinct character since it mainly focuses on development of the traditional Dravidian languages.
