Gujarat University was formed in the year 1949 on the 23rd of November with its headquarters in the capital city of Ahmadabad in the state of Gujarat. The campus of the university is spread over 260 acres and 250 affiliated colleges are functioning under the university. Apart from the affiliated colleges 15 recognized institutions and 14 approved institutions are functioning under the university.

Thirty-four PG department and 221 PG Centers are functioning under the university. This is the biggest and oldest university in the state of Gujarat and students who wish to do professional courses prefer to join this university among the other universities in the state. Over the past five decades of the existence of this university, seven more universities were carved out its jurisdiction.
