Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Science University shortly called as GADVASU was founded in the year 2005 by an act of Punjab Legislature through a government notification dated the 9th of August 2005. Even though the university was established in the year 2005, it started to function from the 21st of April 2006. The university was established mainly with the purpose of promoting production of livestock and prevention of diseases among livestock. The university is offering bachelor of veterinary science and animal husbandry, bachelor of technology in diary technology and several other courses through its constituent colleges. The campus of the university is provided with several facilities like hostel complex, computer centre, animal disease research centre, experimental herd for infectious diseases complex and veterinary postmortem hall. Initially GADUASU was functioning as a constituent called under Punjab Agricultural University and due to its contribution to the field of animal sciences, the institution was upgraded as university. The aims of the university include offering specialist and consultancy services to semi-government, government and individual livestock owners and allied agencies; to offer opportunities for continuing education to professionals in the field  of veterinary sciences; to undertake research work by following multi-disciplinary and systematic approached in areas of animal husbandry and veterinary science and to help the society by providing trained professionals in the field of veterinary science, who can handle the aspects of livestock production and health. The university is offering courses through 18 departments functioning under its campus. The mission of the university is to produce extension workers, scientists and graduates in the field of veterinary science for maintaining the health of livestock.
