Kerala Kalamandalam is a deemed university for arts and culture and the university came into existence in the year 1930. The university is offering education from the Thrissur District of the state of Kerala and the campus of the university is located at Cheruthuruthy. It is acting as a major centre for learning Indian performing arts, particularly those that are developed in the southern states of the nation with particular emphasis on the state of Kerala. the university is located in the banks of the Bharathapuzha river and it was established by the Poet Vallathol Naryana Menon and Makakkulam Mukunda Raja.

The university offers training in theatre forms and classical dance like Nangiar Koothu, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipurdi, Thullal, Kudiyattam, Mohiniyattam and Kathakali in addition to traditional orchestra known as Panchavadyam. The university also offers training in different percussion instruments like mizhavu, Maddalam and Chenda. It follows the gurukula system of education, which is the ancient system of education based on residential tutelage, where students used to stay along with teachers. The university offers training on performing arts and integrated M. Phil and Ph. D courses are being offered by the university in two different subjects. Kerala Kalamandalam offers admission to the integrated M. Phil-Ph. D course for candidates with PG degree in concerned subject or its related or allied subjects with not less than 50% of marks/B+ Grade from the same university or from any other university as well. Thus, the university is working towards the development of arts and culture not only in the state of Kerala, but also in other southern state of the nation as well.
