Manipur University came into existence in the year 1980 on the 5th of June through Manipur University Act 1980. The university was established as a teaching-cum-affiliating university in the capital city of Imphal. The university has its jurisdiction spread over the whole state of Manipur and the university earned the status of one among the central universities in India from the year 2005. The university is offering education through more than 70 affiliated colleges working under its jurisdiction and it also has one constituent college named Manipur Institute of Technology under its campus.

Manipur University offers education through different schools of education functioning under its control and some of these schools are school of life sciences, school of medical sciences, school of social sciences, school of mathematics & physical sciences, school of human and environmental science and school of life sciences. Different department are functioning under each of these schools of education thereby conferring degrees in different disciplines.
