The Indian power industry comprises of various governmental bodies that are in charge of the power systems of our country. Apart from this, this industry is also responsible for the generation of power and its other related infrastructure in India.

The Indian power sector comes under the Ministry of Power, India. They were formerly known as the Ministry of Energy. The functions of the Ministry of Power (MoP) are coordinated by the Central Electricity Authority in aspects of all economic as well as technical areas. Provided below is some of the Power firms of the public sector.

List of Government Power Sector Companies in the North Zone

Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) – This project came into being after the endorsement of the Indus Water Treaty. As per the treaty, the water from the Bias, Ravi and Sutlej were allocated[ to our country for exclusive use. The main objective of this firm is to provide irrigation, power generation and flood control facilities to the people of India.

Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) – This firm is an agency of the Indian government. The firm functions under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Power. It was set up on March 2002. The objective of this firm is to provide people with programs that will aid in the increase as well as efficient usage of energy. The firm also aims at reducing the intensity of energy in the economy.

Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) – This firm is considered to be the first versatile river valley project of our country after it got its independence. The firm came into being on the 7th of July, 1988. The main objective of this firm is to help the economy of our country.

National Hydroelectric Corporation limited- This firm was previously known as the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation. The firm was brought into being in the year 1975. The objective of this corporate is to promote as well as organize the efficient and integrated effort of hydroelectric power development of our country. The firm uses power sources like Solar, Wind, Geothermal and Tidal etc.

North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPC) – This firm was founded on the 2nd of April, 1976. The firm aims at designing, manufacturing, operating and maintaining the power stations that are located in the north eastern part of the nation. The corporate office of this firm is located in Shillong, the heart city of Meghalaya.

Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited – This firm has its base in Mumbai. The firm is responsible for the manufacture of nuclear energy for the production of electricity. The firm is the only one of its kind as it is the one company in India that utilizes nuclear fuel resources.

Power Finance Corporation of India (PFCI) – This firm was initiated in the month of July, 1986. The firm is committed to the integral development of power and its other pertinent sectors.

Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (Power Grid India) – This firm was founded in the year 1989. The firm aims at providing Electric Power from corner to corner of the country. They have their headquarters at Gurgaon.

Power Trading Corporation (PTC) – This firm is a pioneer supplier of power trading solutions in our nation. The primary aim of this firm is to build up a commercially effervescent market in the power sector of India.

Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) – This firm was started on the 25th of July, 1969. The main aim of this firm is to promote as well as finance the electrification in rural communities across the country. Apart from thus, they also provide monetary assistance and consultancy in the creation, transmission and promotion of projects.

Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) – This firm was founded on the 24th of May, 1988. It was a joint venture between the Indian government and the Himachal Pradesh Government. The firm aims at developing and enhancing the function of Hydro-electric power projects.

Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited – This firm is a venture of the Indian government. The firm came into being on July, 1988. The main aim of this firm is to enhance, function and preserve the Power Complex Tehri Hydro power plant.
