There are quite a few companies in the transport sector that are under the aegis of the Indian government. I addition to the state controlled regional transport corporations, there are agencies run by central government too. The details are provided below:

List of Government Transport Companies in the North Zone

  • Delhi Transport Corporation – This is one amongst the most popular transport operators in the city of Delhi.  This firm is acknowledged as the biggest condensed natural gas run bus service operator in the world.

  • AIR India – This is one of the veteran airlines of India. This airline is owned by both the owned by the National Aviation Company of India Limited and the government of India. The headquarters of this airline is located in Mumbai.
  • Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation – This Company is owned by the Indian government. This firm has its headquarters in Gujarat. The Corporation provides service for people both inside the state of Gujarat and other neighboring states. This is a bus service that is owned by the state of Gujarat. The GSRTC was founded on the 1st of May, 1960.
  • Konkan Railways - This is a railway line that runs through Mangalore to Mumbai (all along the western coastline of India). This railway was built and is managed by the Konkan Railway Corporation.
  • Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation – This is the bus service run by the state of Maharashtra. It is acknowledged as the 3rd largest bus service provider in the country.
  • BEST Public bus service: - This is transportation system is controlled by the government in Mumbai. The BEST stands for Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport. The BEST included in it’s a task force single and double Decker buses. Most of the busses are Air conditioned.
  • Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport: - this division function by providing the general public with Volvo buses from Navi Mumbai to Bandra,Borivali and also to Dindoshi.
  • Maritime Transportation Services India - This Company functions underneath the aegis of the Ministry of shipping and the Government of India. The main aim of this company is to promote shipping in our country as to make India self reliant in transporting goods to and fro from firms across the globe. In addition to this, it is also their best interest to safeguard the maritime interest of India.
  • Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) - The RSTRC has its headquarters at Jaipur. One amongst the biggest road transport companies in India, the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation is acknowledged as the sixth largest Government sector Road Transport Corporation in India.
  • Shipping Corporation of India -This is a firm that is owned by the Indian Government. The SCI was founded on the 2nd of October 1961 by the joint venture of the Western Shipping Corporation and the Eastern Shipping Corporation. Subsequent to this, two more shipping firms also fused with the SCI in 1973 and 1986 correspondingly. This firm operates at both the national as well as international level. The SCI started with 19 vessels and it currently has 83 ships of 4.6 million metric tons DWT.
  • The Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) -This firm was founded in the year 1967 as a joint initiative of the Indian government, the Ministry of shipping & Transport and the Association of State Road Transport Undertakings. The firm is committed to improve the competence as well as productivity of the public transport sector. CIRT presents programs in management development that covers transport operations, maintenance engineering and general management.
  • Western Railways -The Western Railways was founded on the 5th of November 1951 as a result of the merger between the Bombay, Baroda & Central India Railway with the other railways of the state. The BB&CI Railway was inaugurated in the year 1855.

As seen, there are a number of transportation companies in the public sector. These companies control the transportation by road, rail, water and by air across the breadth and width of India.
