Indian Institute of Petroleum was established in the year 1960 under the Government of India. Profesor Sameer K. Brahmachari is the Director of the institute and Mr. M. O. Garg is the present director of the institute. It has a staff of around 132 people. It is considered as the premier organisation dedicated to Research & Technology department in the hydrocarbon sector. The institute comes under the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research.
