Speech Therapists And Audiologists
INTRODUCTION
Speech and language therapist assist people who have a speech or language disorder. The audiologists deal with patients who have hearing problems. The process therapist follow is diagnosis of the disorder, an action plan for therapy and finally the therapy. Minor language defects are also corrected. In recent years the role of speech therapists and audiologists has received a lot of attention.
NATURE OF WORK
Speech and language therapists and audiologists work often overlaps as both concern themselves with speech related problems. Generally training on both the functions is carried on simultaneously. The main area of work is related to diagnosis of speech and hearing defects and therapy for speech fluency and voice articulation. Stammering, delayed speech, childhood speech disorders due to brain dysfunction, mental retardation and injuries. A major part of their work involves keeping in touch with other professionals such as teachers, psychologists, doctors and parents to exchange information on the progress of client.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Speech therapists and audiologist work in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and also in special schools hence the environment varies. However the job being a clinical one the facilities resembles that of a clinic. Speech therapists in private practice may have to move from place to place and adapt their skills to the requirements of the patients at their places.
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Speech therapists and audiologists work with patients of all ages adapting to the needs of patients from different age groups requires tremendous patience and understanding. Clarity of verbal language, diction and tone are important for this profession. Ability to plan, coordinate, keep records, monitor progress is required. A scientific bent of mind and the power of reasoning and observation are needed. The job requires patience and dedication.

one of my relative is having stammering, but he is not able to go for a speech therapy.. the government and officials should take this kind of problems in serious. presently he is attenting a speech therapy with 100/- per day.. which is not tollerable to a common man.. govt should take necessory action to get this kind of treatment for free.. in govt hospitals…
