Mizoram University was set up on 2nd July 2001 under the Mizoram University Act, 2000. The university has 27 under-graduate Colleges including 2 professional institutions affiliated to it. The primary objective of the University is to spread advance knowledge by providing research and instructional facilities. The University also aims to offer necessary provisions for integrated courses in humanities, social sciences, forestry, natural and physical sciences, as well as other related disciplines. The university also aims at promoting new innovations in the field of teaching and research.

The University is also involved in educating and training man-power in the development of the state of Mizoram. The University pays special attention to the progress of the social conditions, economic conditions and welfare of the people of Mizoram. The University also aims to develop the academic and cultural aspects of the State.
