Govt companies ie PSUs generally go in IITs and NITs and some other reputed colleges only for direct campus placements. For the students of other colleges they conduct separate examination that usually consist of written test and interview. Also, the jobs in PSUs are sometime provided on the basis of basis of GATE score and personal interview. So, You can either apply directly through GATE or you can go through the separate exams conducted by the PSUs itself. All the related information use to be published in employment news and in some case other dailies as well. As you are a mechanical engineer, you can get chances to apply in mostly govt. companies.
