Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?

Dear friend

Biology with genetics as its part and Maths are the subjects which you must have in your +2 to pursue genetic engineering but you must not loose heart because you do have an other option.

You may go for a bachelors degree in Science/Molecular Biology to gain the eligibility for pusuing graduation and related degrees in the field of Genetics.

Yes maths is compulsory for studying genetic engineering because the basic
eligibility criteria is pass in 12th with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics as
well as genetics as part of the biology or if you have a bachelors degree in
science or molecular biology, then you are also eligible for studying in genetic engineering.

Math is a way of thinking. Logic is a way of thinking. If you can't handle math go into basket weaving. That's what my teachers told me. Ignorant yes, true.....yes. Intillect is so broad though. Find something that fits your cognative ability. I'm going into psychology. Finished engineering years ago. To narrow of a spectrum of the mind.

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?

Since genetic engineering is not offered as under graduate subject in India institutes till now.You can opt for BIOTECHNOLOGY.
For which you have to apply for engineering entrance exams like AIEEE, iitjee, bitsat etc.
Biotechnology is offered as dual degree course which is of 5 yr duration.

maths is a compulsary subject if you want to enter into this stream because you have to qualify for the CET for which you need maths as a background in 12th.But with biology(science) as a background you can join in the MBBS stream

a bachelors degree in science or molecular biology or microbiology student can get admission in genetec engineering at post graduate level. Selection to the postgraduate courses ( M.Sc / M.Tech) in different universities is through an All India Combined Entrance exam conducted by JNU, New Delhi and to IIT's through GATE in Two year/ 4 semester M.Tech courses and through JEE in five year integrated M.Tech courses in Biochemical engineering and Biotechnology.

Most institutes do not offer courses in Genetic Engineering as a special discipline but as a subsidiary in biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry streams. Undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Biotechnology offer specialisation in genetic engineering.

To be a successful genetic engineer, one must have sharp analytical mind, an aptitude for research, high levels of concentration, eye for details, lively imagination, abundant physical stamina to put in long hours of work, ability to work as a team, moreover he should have a sound moral sense.

All the best.

A qualified genetic engineer, must have a graduate / postgraduate degree in genetics or related fields such as biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology or biochemistry OR a doctorate (PhD) from a recognised university, based on 2-3 years of his own research under the guidance of a professor/lecturer.

The basic eligibility criteria for a graduate degree (BE / B.Tech) is 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics as well as genetics as part of the biology OR a bachelors degree in science or molecular biology.

Most institutes do not offer courses in Genetic Engineering as a special discipline but as a subsidiary in biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry streams. Undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Biotechnology offer specialisation in genetic engineering.

Selection to the graduate courses ( BE / B.Tech ) is based on merit i.e the marks secured in the final exams of 10+2 and through entrance exams. Entrance to the IIT's is through JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) and for other institutions through their own separate entrance exams and other state level and national level exams. Apart from the IIT's, some other famous institutes also recognize JEE scores for selection.

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?

HI!

Sorry. you can not apply for graduate degree in genetic engineering since the basic eligibility criteria for a graduate degree (BE / B.Tech) is 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics as well as genetics as part of the biology.

But, don't loose heart there is one way in which you can apply for genetic engineering. In some institutes/universities the eligibility criteria is a bachelors degree in science
or molecular biology.

So, if you are really interested in doing genetic engineering you should do bachelors degree in science or molecular biology first & then appear in the entrance test for admission to the genetic engineering course.

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?

HELLO,don't get fear of it there is no compulsion of having maths background for become a genetic engineer.you can get it via having maths or bio.but you must have biology/biotechnology as in your 10+2 subjects.be graduate with biotechnology & you can chose genetic engineering for your post graduate degree.i'm b.sc. in biotech, only engineering means not only maths in genetic engineering we produce the genetically modified organisms(GMO).and use the restriction enzymes to replace the fragments there are no maths formula for it.do your master degree with renowned & affiliated college.
OK,BEST OF LUCK.

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?

Remember One thing for doing Engineering in any branch you must have basic subject of MATHS.
and for doing graduate degree (BE / B.Tech) the basic eligibility criteria is 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
That says that biology and maths are compulsory to do Genetic Engineering ..

Suggestion:If you don't had these subject in 12th class then better you do B.Sc and go for higher studies like M.Sc and Phd will definitely take you towards your goal.

you can't persue genetic engineering without having maths in 12.
but there are options that you can put your step forward
1.biotech
2.bioinformatics
etc
good luck
