The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India conducts a Civil Services Examination
once every year. Through this examination appointment is done to the various services and
Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of those services.

All graduates are academically qualified to appear this examination. Being as MBBS you are
eligible for the exam. The age limitation for the exam is given hereafter;
21-30 years for GEN category candidates
21-33 years for OBC (NC Layer) category candidates
& 21-35 for SC/ST/PD category candidates.

The examination comprises of two stages which are as follows.

1. Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Examination whihc is also named as Civil Services Aptitude Test is a
common test for all applicants.
The CSAT contains questions from General studies (History, Geography, Politics, Economics
and social development, General Science) English & Mathematical Aptitude etc.

2. Main Exam and Interview
The CSAT qualified candidates can appear Main exam which is subjective test and on the
basis of Main exam score , candidates are called for Personal Interview.

The Main examination will contain following papers
1. Indian Language Qualifying Paper (300 marks)
2. English Qualifying Paper (300 marks)
3. General Essay type paper (200 marks)
4. General Studies (Paper-I & II 300 marks each)
5. Optional subject-I(Paper-I & II 300 marks each)
6. Optional subject-II(Paper-I&II 300 marks each)

The subject for optional paper are;

Agriculture
Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science
Anthropology
Botany
Chemistry
Civil Engineering
Commerce and Accountancy
Economics
Electrical Engineering
Geography
Geology
History
Law
Management
Mathematics
Mechanical Engineering
Medical Science
Philosophy
Physics
Political Science and International Relations
Psychology
Public Administration
Sociology
Statistics
Zoology
You have to choose any two subjects from the above list but you should keep in mind
that following combinations of two optional subjects are not permissible.
- Political Science & International Relations and Public Administration;
- Commerce & Accountancy and Management;
- Anthropology and Sociology;
- Mathematics and Statistics;
- Agriculture and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science.
- Management and Public Administration;
- Any two engineering subjects
- Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science and Medical Science.

You can get the detailed syllabus of each subject from the previous year advertisement of
