Basically you will have to either apply for job in Public Sector Undertaking or you have the option to sit for the Indian Engineering Service entrance exam. Both these are the best option for government job.

You should first try your luck in the Indian Engineering Service. IES is conducted for very reputed government jobs in various deparments. These departments have different field of expertise like roads, highways, defence, railways etc.

Since you are Civil Engineering stream student, it is possible for you to appear for the Indain Engineering Service. But please beware that IES is one of the most difficult entrance exams in the world.

(i) Indian Railway Service of Engineers

(ii) Indian Railway Stores Service

(iii) Central Engineering Service

(iv) Indian Defense Service of Engineers

(v) Indian Ordnance Factories Service (IOFS)

(vi) Central Water Engineering

(vii) Central Engineering Service (Roads)

(viii) Border Roads Engineering Service

Above are the government departments which hires Civil Engineers through the Indian Engineering Service entrance exam by the Union Public Service Commission.

2. Degree: B.Tech or B.E. is required.

4. Age Limit: As on August 1 of examination year you should be 21 to 30 years old.

5. Relaxation: Only 3 years for OBC.

If you fail to make the cut then apply for job in Public Sector Undertaking. You will have to appear for the entrance exam by the respective PSU to be hired. The selection procedure is written test and interview.

But some PSUs don't conduct written test. Here you will have to show General Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE). The GATE score should not be older than 2 years.

Eligibility

1. Course: Bachelor of Technology/Engineering from recognized college.

2. Marks: No less than 60 percent are required.

3. Candidate with pending backlog is not eligible.

4. GATE score is required or job in some PSUs.

5. Age Limit: 21 is lower limit while 30 is upper limit.

6. Age Relaxation is same as for IES entrance exam.

You can apply for jobs in public sector companies after B.Tech provided you will be able to clear written examination. Opportunities also come about in banks as PO/Specialist officer post. Try for section engineer, divisional engineer post in railways as well. Defense sector job is also a good option for B.Tech holders. UPSC CDS is the exam which you need to qualify as part of selection.
