ABOUT CDS EXAM :


The "Combined Defence Services" Examination is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment into the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy.

The Notification for the examination is usually released in the months of October and June, and the examinations are conducted in February and November respectively.

Only unmarried graduates are eligible to sit for the exam. Successful candidates are admitted into the respective Academies after an interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB).

> > For Indian Military Academy/Officers' Training Academy: Degree from a recognized university or equivalent.

> > For Naval Academy: B.Sc. with Physics & Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering.

> > For Air Force Academy: Degree of a recognized University with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level or Bachelor of Engineering.

Age Limit

> > Indian Military Academy : 19-24 years

> > Air Force Academy: 19-23 years

> > Naval Academy : 19-24 years

> > Officers’ Training Academy: 19-25 years .

Scheme of Examination

* * Indian Military Academy / Naval Academy / Air Force Academy : All the papers are of objective type.

General Knowledge

Elementary Mathematics

Total 300


* * Officers' Training Academy : All the papers are of objective type.

Candidates successful in the written exam are then called for an interview by a Services Selection Board which evaluates a candidate's suitability for a career in the Indian Armed Forces.

The acronym for CDS is Combined Defence Services.


CDS examination is conducted by UPSC(Union Public Service Commission) twice every year in the months of February and September respectively.


CDS examination is conducted for these following wings:-

* Indian Naval Academy(INA).

* Indian Air Force Academy(IAFA/IAA).

* Indian Military/Army Academy(IMA).

* Officer's Training Academy(OTA).

The last exam of Combined Defence Services was held by UPSC on 12th Feb. UPSC conducts this exam twice in a year.

The exam aims to test the candidate's proficiency in English, General Knowledge and Maths. the detailed syllabus is given in the notification. Even though the exam is already over, you can still see the last notification in the UPSC website http://www.upsc.gov.in under Examinations->Notification->Archival.

The next exam is likely to be notified on 2nd June and the date of exam will be 16th Sept.

Air Force Academy

At the time of application, you will have to mention that which academy(or academies)
you are willing to apply for.

The CDS examination comprises of three papers which are,
English (100 marks)
General Mathematics (100 marks)
General Knowledge (100 marks)

If you apply for Officers' Training Academy only then you will have only two papers
in the examination which are; English and General Knowledge.

The eligibility criteria for different academies are as under;

Indian Millitary Academy
Age: 19-24 Years
Education: Graduation in any stream from a recognized university.

Air Force Academy
Age: 19-23 Years
Education: B.Sc. with Maths. and Physics or B.E.

Indian Naval Academy
Age: 19-22 Years
Education: B.Sc. with Maths. and Physics or B.E.

Officers' Training Academy

The question standard in Mathematics paper will be of Matriculation (10th) level.

ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS
The maths. paper shall contain question from following sections.
ARITHMETIC, ALGEBRA, TRIGONOMETRY, GEOMETRY, MENSURATION, STATISTICS
