Re: How to prepare for IAS after B.Tech? Which optional subjects will suit me better? Best books for prelims and mains?

You are eligible to make into Indian Administrative Service soon after the completion of your B.Tech course.

Here is the complete information regarding that.

You should have to crack the following selection procedure

Civil Services Aptitude Test
Civil Services Main Exam
Interview

You should have completed your Graduation with any of the stream to be eligible to apply for this Exam.

Your age should be between 21-30 years to apply for this Exam.
Relaxation in upper age limit upto 3 years for the candidates of OBC category and upto 5 years for the candidates of SC or ST category.

As you have mentioned that you completed your B.Tech in Technical stream, I hope it is
B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering or
B.Tech in Information Technology

With regard to civil services exam, there are no optional subjects related to Computers.

But you can opt for Mathematics or Physics as the optional subject for Main Exam.

If you are interested, you can also opt for any of the following optional subjects
-Civil Engineering
-Mechanical Engineering
-Electrical Engineering

Choose the optional subject in accordance with your knowledge in that subject and complete the above stated selection procedure.

Wish you all the best.

In the Civil Services Exam, the Preliminary Exam is common to all. If you get through the Prelims, you will be eligible to appear for the Mains. Here, you have to select two optional subjects. Of course, you have to decide which optional subject you will select, even while applying for the Prelims.

There are about 25 subjects in Arts, Science, Technology, Medicine, Management, Humanities, etc. from which you have to select two.

Obviously, you should choose your current subject, ie, if you are doing BTech (Civil), then Civil Engineering would be an automatic choice.

Now, you have to choose one more subject. Go through the list of all the other subjects. Their syllabus is also given. Past question papers can also be seen from the UPSC website. After going through all this, you can decide about the second subject. Of course, if you are quite comfortable, you can select even both the subjects outside your current graduation course.

However, do remember, the last date for submission of online application is 5th March. Hence, decide quickly and act swiftly.
