Iam interested in astronomy and astrophysics.Is there any course after 12th and JEE result or it is necessary to do graduation like B.E or B.Tech and then to do further study to experties in astronomy and astrophysics?Is there any specific study in india?Where?and outside india?Where? |

Re: Career in Astronomy and Astrophyics Carrer in Astronomy and Astrophysics Astronomy is the science which deals with the study of heavenly bodies. It considers (a) their motions, both real and apparent, and the laws which govern those motions; (b) their forms, dimensions, masses, and surface features; (c) their nature, constitution, and physical condition; (d) the effects which they produce upon one another by their attractions and radiations; (e) their probable past history and future development. Astronomy is necessarily an observational science rather than an experimental one. The discussions and interpretation of observations employs the use of mathematical analysis, often of the most advanced type. Celestial bodies and celestial environment provide natural laboratories for studying physical phenomena in extreme conditions which are seldom realised in our terrestrial environment.Physical and mathematical theories are thus stretched to the limit to provide explanations for the celestial phenomena that we observe. Modern astronomy requires the use of most modern and advanced technologies, e.g. in fabrication of modern telescopes, in buildingimaging and spectrscopic equipment to observe and analyse radiation received from the celestial objects. It needs fast computers, state-of-the-art software to handle data and process images, it needs stable space platforms to observe radiation otherwise blocked by the Earth's atmosphere. Existing Facilities Observing facilities available in Astronomy & Astrophysics are : • Optical and Infra-red Astronomy 2.3M Vainu Bappu Telescope at Kavalur 2M Telescope (Chandra Telescope) at Hanle, IAO, Hanle 1M Class Telescopes at Kavalur • Solar Facilities Solar Optical Observatory at Kodaikanal Gauribidanur Radioheliograph • Radio Astronomy Radio Array at Gauribidanur Job Opportunities & Career Prospects An acute need for young scientists in the field of Astronomy is present. The following possibilities are open for a career for a physics / mathematics / engineering graduate with a specialization or a Ph.D. in Astronomy & Astrophysics • Research Scientist Several research institutes and government organizations employ research scientists in various academic grades for research oriented programmes. • University Faculty There will be more openings in the universities, especially in physics departments, for specialists in Astronomy & Astrophysics • Industry Experience with sophisticated astronomical instrumentation and the expertise gained in computer programming and handling data can serve as valubale assets for jobs in industry. |

Re: Career in Astronomy and Astrophyics Sir, it is very good choice to become an astronomer . The min qualification for an astronomer is Ph.d in astrophysics. There is no undergraduate programme in astrophysics. So go for the Ph.d after M.phil because for Ph.d M.phil is must. And this field is very suitable for you and has very bright future. And there is potential for growth in the field. With the construction of the International Space Station, there will be a permanent human presence in outer space and a need for astronauts. But becoming an astronaut in the U.S. space program is not easy, and the process can take several years. There are three types of astronauts in the U.S. space program: Commander/pilot Mission specialist Payload specialist The commander is responsible for the mission, the crew and the vehicle. The pilot assists the commander in operating the vehicle and deploying satellites. The mission specialist works with the commander and pilots in shuttle operations, performs spacewalks and conducts experiments. The payload specialist performs specialized duties as the mission requires. Payload specialists are people other than NASA personnel, and some are foreign nationals. The basic qualifications for becoming an astronaut include: U.S. citizenship (for pilots and mission specialists) Bachelor's degree (engineering, biological sciences, physical sciences, mathematics) from an accredited college or university Three years of related experience after obtaining the bachelor's degree - A master's degree equals one year of experience, and a doctorate equals three years. Passing a NASA space physical examination - Pilots need to pass a Class I physical; mission/payload specialists must pass Class II. Both are similar to civilian and military flight examinations. More than 1,000 hours experience as pilot-in-command of a jet aircraft (pilots only) Height of 64 to 76 inches (162.5 cm to 193 cm) for pilots, 58.5 to 76 inches (148.5 cm to 193 cm) for mission/payload specialists |

Re: Career in Astronomy and Astrophyics dear friend If you want to be an astronomer or astrophysicist then you will need a Ph.D. Most uni's don't have astronomy or astrophysics as an undergraduate degree..... So go to the best university that you are accepted to and feel is a good fit for you. |
