Re: Is it essential to do PG before doing UPSC preparation?

Civil Service Examination is conducted by UPSC. The examination is conducted in three stages and required minimum eligibility to appear for the examination is bachelor degree in any discipline.

The three stages are - Preliminary, Mains and Interview. Candidates can choose optional paper other than discipline in bachelor degree.

So, it is not compulsory to pursue master degree but better understanding of all the concept is required to qualify in all the stages of examination. For more information about the examination visit at www.upsc.gov.in.

The eligibility to appear for UPSC CSE is that candidate must have passed bachelor degree from a recognised university.

The eligibility is conducted in three stages. Candidates with bachelor degree in any discipline are eligible to appear for the examination. So, you can appear for the examination and master degree is not mandatory to appear for the examination.

As far as you are concerned about the necessity of PG (Post Graduate) degree in optional subject before UPSC preparation then it is not essential as for appearing in the Civil Services examination (often known as UPSC examination) bachelor degree holder any discipline are eligible and hence PG degree is not essential.

But, if as far as preparation is concerned going for PG degree in optional subject can be beneficial as you will be studying a particular subject of your interest for two years but that does not necessarily mean that you must go for it as preparation for optional subject like Economics can be done through coaching institutes as well.

I'm a student and pursuing graduation in Economics. As I've been told that the optional subject questions comes on the basis of masters degree.
