No need to study M.Phil if you have got Master's degree with at least 55% marks from a recognized University. You can apply for any Ph.D entrance exam for getting admission. There are many Ph.D entrance exams conducted by various Universities across India.

If you have NET/SLET/JRF qualification then no need to appear for any other entrance exam and apply for direct admission in Ph.D by appearing for interview. Most of the top Universities will give preference to candidates with NET/SLET/JRF qualification for Ph.D admission.
